From Gravel Roads to Championship Fields

Walter Sherman turns 100 in June of 2026. He has called Northbrook home since 1930, witnessing the Village grow from gravel roads and farmland into the community it is today. He grew up near Timber Lane and Shermer Road and remembers when horses and farms were part of everyday life.

A standout athlete at Northbrook High School, Walter went on to become the first head football coach at Glenbrook North High School when it opened in 1953. He later also coached at Glenbrook South High School and helped choose the school colors at both schools, which are still used today.
