Then & Now: Northbrook's Fleet Maintenance Garage
As part of Public Works Week, we’re looking back at the history of Northbrook’s Fleet Maintenance Garage. Originally built in 1956, the building first housed the entire Public Works Department along with fleet maintenance operations in its east wing. A west wing was added in 1966 to meet growing demand, and by 1980, Public Works had moved to its current location. Since then, the garage behind Village Hall has continued to play an important role in maintaining the Village’s fleet.
Over time, the facility has been outgrown by the Village’s modern fleet needs, but its legacy of supporting daily operations and emergency response remains an important part of Northbrook’s history.
Projects like the new Fleet Maintenance Garage represent the long-term planning, investment, and care that Public Works brings to the community every day. From maintaining roads and water systems to supporting emergency response and Village operations, Public Works helps keep Northbrook running behind the scenes.
A new Fleet Maintenance Garage is now on the way at 3504 Commercial Avenue, and you can follow project updates here.
